We love a good kitchen transformation—and this one might be one of my most recent favorites.

Welcome to Project Blackbird: a remodel that started with a tight, outdated layout and ended with an open, light-filled kitchen designed for gathering, cooking, and living beautifully.

Our clients dreamed of a space that felt calm but elevated, functional but warm. The bones were there—we just needed to open up the floor plan to unlock its full potential.

Let’s start with the big change…

We knocked out a major dividing wall to open this kitchen up and connect it to the rest of the home. That single structural shift transformed everything—the perspective, flow, & natural light. With the new layout in place, we leaned into natural textures, layered neutrals, and soft contrast to bring the space to life.

The materials

The only element that remained in tact during this renovation are the existing floors which run through the first floor. We incorporated the floors by selecting cabinetry finished in a custom oak stain that feels modern but timeless. We paired it with a Denali Brushed quartzite countertop that wraps the perimeter and expansive island.

The island alone makes such a statement—it’s both a prep zone and a gathering place. Overhead, the woven pendants bring in texture and play beautifully with the faux white oak ceiling beams, which were added to visually anchor the space and draw your eye up. Did you know these beams are custom crafted using a hand textured and distressed foam?

Every material was selected with intention—from the matte black hardware to the brass fixtures, each finish was chosen to create contrast without feeling stark.

Details we love

  • The plaster-style hood: soft and sculptural, it adds a handcrafted feel above the range.

  • Open shelves on the sink wall: a perfect moment for styling!

  • A pot filler, because who doesn’t love one-especially on pasta night!

  • Triple pendant lighting, scaled for symmetry and texture to introduce an organic element to the space.

  • Natural light, everywhere! Removing the wall allowed for windows and views to take center stage which was a must-have for our clients.

  • The bifold doors out to the backyard, this truly creates an incredible entertaining space.

The Inspiration

This kitchen feels like a California-modern-organic-casual...you get the picture. It’s relaxed and livable, but every detail is dialed. The layered wood tones, mixed metals, and soft styling make it feel inviting without being too minimal or too traditional. It’s just… right.

To our clients: thank you for trusting us to reimagine this space. It’s always our goal to create something beautiful, but even more so—something that feels like you. We hope this kitchen brings joy to your everyday moments and becomes the backdrop for countless memories to come.
